Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to a yoga class?
Wear comfortable, breathable and flexible clothing that you will be able to move into yoga postures with. Leggings, tracksuit bottoms, shorts and a top that won’t move around are possible examples of suitable clothing. In cooler months, you might want to make sure you have warmer clothing to put on at the end of the class. Yoga is normally practiced bare footed to ensure that you can grip the mat. You can buy socks that have gripping on the bottom which may be suitable.
What should I bring with me to a class?
I have some yoga mats that can be used for the first few sessions but I would advise that you buy a yoga mat if you intend to practice regularly. I also provide equipment for use during class such as straps and blocks. You may wish to purchase these after a few sessions. Other things to bring with you:
Warm clothing for the end of the session
Blanket for relaxation at the end of a session which can also be used as a prop
Pillow which can be used as a prop or to sit on
Water bottle to make sure you keep hydrated, particularly in warmer months.
I’m not flexible, can I do yoga?
Yes! Yoga really can be for everyone - it’s not just about flexibility. There are many benefits to practicing yoga including improving flexibility as well as strength. Postures in classes can be adapted to meet individual needs as we use props and individual adjustments. So you definitely don’t need to be able to touch your toes!
I’m new to yoga, are classes suitable for me?
My classes are perfect for beginners as they are of a slower pace. We spend more time moving into poses and finding the alignment that suits your body type. Classes can still be challenging as we hold postures for a longer amount of time. If in doubt, please contact me to find out more.
I’m new to yoga, what’s the etiquette in classes?
There are several points I ask of students attending classes:
Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of the session to set up and ensure that we start on time. If you arrive 10 minutes late it can be disruptive to fellow students. I may make the decision not to allow you to join the class.
Mobile phones must be put away in bags and on silent.
If you need to leave early, please let me know at the beginning of the class and place yourself so that you can leave with minimal disruption to the rest of the class.
Shoes and coats can be placed at the side of the room or outside of the room where there are pegs available. It is recommended to keep valuable personal items with you.
I have a health condition. Can I still do yoga?
Yoga has many benefits and poses can normally be adjusted or alternatives offered to suit individual needs and taking into account any health conditions or injuries. It is more than likely you will be able to practice yoga. However it is recommended that you speak with your doctor before taking part in a class if you are in any doubt and in all cases you must speak with me prior to starting to inform me of any conditions/injuries.
It is also important to take responsibility for your own body and look after yourself. Avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits and if you are in any doubt about what you are doing please make sure you ask me.
If you have a cold or Covid, please do not attend class out of respect for yourself and other students. Resting will be more appropriate.
